As a general rule, you should get more skeptical around any information that people feel strongly about - including information that comes from academia. The more politically sensitive something is, the less you should easily trust anything around it.

Peer review is mostly about gatekeeping. Reviewers can't really check the data they just check the formal bullshit

You should trust academic sources more than any other sources?

It’s my working hypothesis that whenever you hear something that instantly pisses you off, without any thought, is something you need to look at in more depth. That feeling is a good indicator that you’ve been brainwashed/indoctrinated, rather than reaching a rational conclusion.

It's often tough to tease out what suffers from this "politically sensitive" bias -- "would be politically sensitive in a counterfactual world" can suffer too. (Consider most studies on nutrition, in a world where powerful corporations significantly affect consumption habits.)

Snide jokes aside: not sure passionate/dispassionate interest is even a thing you can measure? Oh, the doc cares about COVID, but what’s the Care : Skepticism ratio were aiming for?

I find that it's the more emotionally negative stories that are the least useful, from an intellectual perspective, at least. (Negative emotional stories are good for finding those who want something similar. Positive emotional stories are more useful for understanding life.)
