I worked my summer internships in two investment banks in Hong Kong. You got paid, and the first HK$100k was tax free, then it’s 15% on every dollar over that.

No, but I’m moving to Seattle after the pandemic, and it would make it very hard to leave for SF/NYC between cost of living and state/local taxes

Not me but given your tax situation (self employed, good income, few business expenses to offset the income) I'm not surprised that you're moving. I know a couple that retired young and moved to Washington for the same reason.

I got close enough to do extensive scouting, and if my wife hadn't hated the destination we would have done it. Worked out not to but objectively moving was the right play.
