can cult-escapees be a minority? super underprivileged class with lots of invisible hardships and there's basically no understanding in culture for the difficulties around it.

Eh borderline. We didn't have the shunning or the single charismatic leader, but we did have intense isolation from the outside world and crazy beliefs.
