The people who died were mostly trapped in the pavillion by locked doors or caught at the exit turnstiles which were locked. It must have been absolutely horrible

I remember watching this unfold live on BBC Grandstand (live Saturday afternoon sports programme) as a kid. They started by saying we’ve had reports of a small fire in a stand at Valley Parade. A wooden stand, a discarded cigarette & accumulated rubbish underneath.

I saw this particular footage at a Fire Brigade H&S course I attended a few years ago, as an example of how fast a fire can spread. It was the smoke coming off peoples hair & clothes, when they weren’t obviously on fire that got me.
