I guess I've just been "deplatformed". The organizers of this talk just told me they must cancel me as "Existing controversies over claims you made elsewhere were just brought to our attention." No more explanation of what claims or why they are a problem.https://www.meetup.com/Effective-Altruism-Munich/events/272121962/ …

Not a fan of this kind of deplatforming. But, IMO, it shouldn't be terrifying or even surprising.

It's not very surprising coming from EA. Sorry to say it. I'm not even against EA as a movement or even it's general principles as they are when stated in a vacuum. It just didn't have good defenses against bullshit creep. It didn't have *any* defenses against that.
-
And to be honest, if your movement has anything whatsoever to do with morality, or ethics, and spends a lot of time talking about it... You're basically screwed unless your defenses are fantastic. Hasn't been done yet, afaik.

EA has no barriers to entry. Anyone can call themselves an EA. People will do bad shit, however you define bad shit, under the EA umbrella, sooner or later.
-
And legitimacy drag has been a *central* trend in the movement since day one. It’s not like, say, sexual harassment, which I expect to show up in EA just because it’s common in the gen. pop. Trying to look fancy, mainstream, and respectable is an explicit and oft-stated goal.

Yeah. I now expect this fracture point to schism EA. The autistic-ish, first principles, rationalist types will wave a flag for certain (extreme, to the general population) discourse norms, and cluster that steers more by social perception and aims for legitimacy...
-
...will either want to distance the from or punish the rationalist-y type, for having bad optics / sounding like racists. This fracture was always there, I think, less evident because the broader culture, gave lip-service to "thinking for yourself".

Robin, hope you learned to never apologize. I lost a hero that day...
