I believe that, if you pursue truth far enough, everything will be okay. On the other side, there will be compassion and acceptance. If it looks 'bad' on the way through, it's just because you don't have the full story, but this shouldn't stop you from acknowledging harsh truths.

I don't feel fear of admitting truths that might seem 'bad.' I don't see them as bad. I believe under every 'bad' action there's a human being with a story. And freaking out at acknowledging 'badness' in groups just shuts down our ability to explore their stories.

The problem is I don't think you can prove that assertion. Maybe in your experience Black men have cat called you more often, but even then individuals are susceptible to confirmation bias and many other factors. If there's no actual data, you can't say that w/ certainty.

In general this is true. But in this instance, there was a generalized assertion that is not accepted as fact, not empirically verified and based solely on personal experience (though not presented that way), and no demonstration of sensitivity about the underlying factors.

“in my experience catcalling has been mostly black men - is there a correlation? What would the causes be? Should we then reconsider demonizing catcalling?” may elicit said unreasonable outrage. Outrage at how you put it may more probably be based on other, reasonable factors

Didn’t shut it down. Just made a conditional statement that it’s a prejudiced idea. Once I see evidence, I’m good on exploring it and honestly think a study should be done. Not only on what race in the US catcalls more, but who women of every race thinks catcalls the most.
