Anecdotally— as a man, actually complimenting straight dudes is a very risky call, some are touched and secure and accept. Others become defensive, uncomfortable and occasionally aggressive. They don’t like to feel like the woman does, is the inside explanation.

If a man told me I was handsome and I didn’t know him, I’d be concerned. Mostly because I’m not attracted to men and compliments make me very uncomfortable, especially from strangers.

Was walking to tennis one day a couple years ago, and a guy catcalled me from his car to the extent that drivers behind him had to honk I'm straight but rarely have I felt so flattered

I voted "positively" as a male but it would probably be more neutral, or even met with confusion, because I've never had it happen. Though in the long run, I would take it as a compliment.
