I like my job, the pay is really good. But in exchange for this high pay is the constant low-level pressure of being the only person responsible for all of the decisions, for having no strategic help, for really high variance in income, for it being generally high risk.

I’ve had some of that. Earning a lot more than I expected made it go a lot faster since I already had a good plan. Then it gave me a way to handle bigger changes even without reaching full “retirement” level.

It’s quite possible that I was subconsciously willing to pursue higher income because I knew exactly what I would do with it and how it would help.
