What are ipads good for? What do they do that laptops and phones are worse at? Would you recommend getting one?

There are some specialized use-cases for them. For example, if you're into boating or aviation, there are navigation/general helper apps that are super useful and only exist on iPad. I can't say that I personally use it for much else, though.

iPad are my goto device for reading books, reviewing papers, watching movies, youtube, emails, video conf, gaming, social n/w, browsing, painting, making music. iPad are fast, super stable, lightweight and very functional. I know many non-developer folks now rarely using laptops.

It's nice to use for playing music and setting it on a stand. Easier to see than a phone and sit on a stand unlike a laptop.

I wondered the use of them when they first came out, and didn't think they'd take off (silly me).
Main benefits are for casual users, to pick up off the coffee table, without taking space up and waiting to be switched on/off.
