Sometimes it feels like the only reason any given group of people aren't complete assholes is because everybody else would shame them if they were.
But provide immunity from shame or agreed-upon excuses for bad behavior, and said group will probably act like complete assholes.

That's a bleak worldview. Personally, I know many groups of people who I am certain would choose to behave decently without threat or incentive. A bleak worldview indeed. And probably in part self-fulfilling.

I like to think this isn’t true for the crew I’ve put together. I think it’s true for most unmanaged or poorly managed groups because assholes invade those groups and drive out the decent people. But decent people do exist and I think likely make up the majority of the species

Everyone is capable of shameful acts, its just a matter of measuring how shitty of a person you can be within a select group of people
