no i'm thinking of something like: "Don't tell me what to do" is telling someone what to do; to say "But you just told me what to do" is applying the rule to itself and is also besides the point in like a categorical way

Maybe the original rule is really something like "don't tell anyone what to do when they're not interfering with anyone else." I don't think that is vulnerable to the same rebuttal.
