Racism is not primarily a psychological phenomenon, but a system of disparities that can maintain itself even if most people want to be "fair" or don't actually have any individual bias. It also requires prejudice + power. I think what you are asking about is more "bias"

It’s necessary. We learned a long time ago that our racial problems are systemic and often subtle. As such, usage of the term has become more accurate, nuanced, and therefore more useful Grad students in relevant fields have been using the word this way for many years now
