The attempt to redefine racism away from the dictionary definition into the "systemic privilege" one is, imo, an attempt to remove the intensely horrible associations with actual racism, to minimize its harms, and to provide a socially acceptable avenue for its practice.

Because from the inside, people who are being racist feel like they're not. They have reasons for why it's justified, or not really racism. And that should absolutely *terrify* you. We should keep the definition of racism free from justifications or 'not really racism.'

There has been considerable scholarship about the beginning of slavery in the colonies, why Africans were enslaved and whites and natives were not, and all the related subjects. It is more complex than is tweetable. Slavery was common in Europe, Rome and Africa for many years.

Blacks were enslaved because native Americans and whites couldn't handle that kind of heavy labor in tropical conditions. They died too quickly. Sub-Saharan Africans have adaptations that allowed them to survive those conditions. It was a business decision. Sad but true.

"others did it too" is about the worst defensive argument one can make. we're not here to discus what 'others' did. We are here to discus what we did. and how we need to live with what we did and the consequences thereof.
