and also this is not just really about you. over the past year or two i've seen instances of something that reminds me of this mentality in the rationalist community in ways that really horrify me in some primal way and so this is just pushing me over the edge

i feel like if this community were a tribe in the planes and we got overrun by enemies, i would be raped and kidnapped while everyone was standing around debating the risk factors and sterilizing their groceries after 72 hours

I think virtuous is the right way to look at it. There's no module in the human brain that does transparent Bayesian calculations when it comes to helping or ignoring someone. Once the decision is made under the hood, th code pushes your felt sense hard in that direction.

I think it isn't really about the community, but about the sort of people who it attracts. I at least know that my emotions are way more scared of failure than is rational, and they were before I ever heard of Yudkowsky.
