"In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him..." "And then, in that very moment when I love them... I destroy them." - Ender's Game by Orson Scott

I had to embrace both good and evil, like Walt Whitman, before this worked.

I wonder if we could see ourselves as we truly are?

we blind ourselves cos seeing them just like us makes us too vulnerable ... we all little kids on a stage suffering and struggling and stressing, trying to do the best we can without making things worse ... we fear mistakes lie at every corner ... risking love is far too reckless

I don't know if I'd call it intense exactly. Bored detachment has its own intensity. The pounding dull grind of humanity in a traffic jam. But it's definitely hard to sustain, that exquisite compassion where grief and joy and mutuality are wrapped up together. "I see us!"

I feel like there's a parallel here to compassion: when you truly recognise the capacity of other beings to suffer, it becomes as important to ease their suffering as your own. I think few people have the capacity to extend that much beyond their closest and dearest people.

I have to agree with you there. I'm an empath and my feels are already off the charts lately. That would reduce me to a fetal position if I fell in love constantly.

There's someone I used to know that I fell for; sometimes I wonder if they were actually just that first person after gaining my own ability to see someone for who they are.
