One data point here: I was sexually assaulted last year and I didn't even begin to even start thinking about going to the police because I don't trust them.

Is it possible that, in addition to whatever individual or systemic failures of the justice system produce this unease on the part of victims to come forward, there is also a part played by well meaning people that serve to create unnecessary paranoia & distrust of the process?

There's other information that contributes to my distrust that I don't feel comfortable talking about on twitter, but I can assure you this isn't just baseless worry.
Aella obviously doesn't need to detail her personal experiences, but as a guy w/a lot of female friends over the years, if you are a woman reporting a rape or sexual assault there is a very strong chance that you will be treated like garbage unless you are an approved sort of
