One data point here: I was sexually assaulted last year and I didn't even begin to even start thinking about going to the police because I don't trust them.

I obviously can't and wouldn't tell you or anyone else to do, but I was stunned to find last year when I reported my stalker that the criminal side of the process was easy, warm and compassionate, and the civil side (pursuing a restraining order) was a months-long nightmare

Ah yes I'm down with that but for some reason I imagine getting a restraining order doesn't require me to interact with actual police

While thinking "abolish the police" is a terrible idea, don't blame you in the slightest. Know a lot of people this happened to and haven't known anyone who went to the cops since high school, and most didn't then either

I am beginning to suspect you’ve had difficult experiences with police. That degree of distrust usually doesn’t manifest without strongly negative personal experiences.
