Religion is a self-sustaining beast. It reproduces - it's got 'evangelizing' parts and 'have lots of babies' parts - also some vestigial 'don't abort' and 'get married before sex' parts too, which were ideal in its original environment, but now no longer useful. 1/

The inverse is true, isn't it? The more likely it is that children will survive, the better the strategy of "shotgun as many out as possible" becomes. Think about it -- in the past too many babies meant getting punished by disease and lack of food. No longer.

I think you have it backwards. Anti abortion is a relatively recent view. The rule was impractical back then because infant mortality was so high, but with modern medicine they can "afford" to be more strict.
