It diminishes the reality of eliminating real people from the world if their memory and all evidence of them is erased.
W no way to evaluate if the 50% gone changed anything over those few years...dunno? Probably not.

A culture that approved of pushing the old button would halve itself into oblivion.
But a culture that approved of the new button might double themselves into an unsustainable hellscape.

This also begs the question of....if there is no memory, nor evidence there were people who were eliminated....who would make the new button, or even know what it does? There would be no incentive to create said button because no one would think anything was missing.
