dude it must be surreal af to be Derek Chauvin right now. Can you imagine being the trigger for the united states to lose its collective shit? I wonder if he feels awful.
re: comments about remorse/psychopathy. I think thinking that assholes don't feel remorse is really dangerous - because they *do* feel remorse, and if you think remorse means they're not an asshole then this is a dangerous trap. This is what keeps people in abusive relationships.
as in; people are really good at convincing themselves to feel the correct emotions (you and me included!) for the situation. If people are really mad at you you will likely feel guilty and bad, but this does *not* mean you are less dangerous or will actually change.
so when I'm asking if Derek feels bad, I'm not asking if he's an asshole or not. I'm just curious about what the weight of an entire nation hating you feels like. I suspect it probably triggers intense remorse. I also don't think this should impact how we treat him.
I have no doubt that he is such a heartless piece of shit that he didn't lose a second of sleep over any of this. and I doubt it was the first time he murdered a man.
so, i agree with you that he is scary and bad and i would not be surprised if he murdered before. But on principle, I really hate any sort of assumption that we definitely know what is inside other people's heads, no matter how awful they are.
I do get scared when we think we have deductive evidence for someone's inner state (i.e., they did action X therefore MUST feel Y). We know that people are irrational enough to have any Y precede an action X. Best you can do is say "it's likely," but that means you've left 1/
