as in; people are really good at convincing themselves to feel the correct emotions (you and me included!) for the situation. If people are really mad at you you will likely feel guilty and bad, but this does *not* mean you are less dangerous or will actually change.

so when I'm asking if Derek feels bad, I'm not asking if he's an asshole or not. I'm just curious about what the weight of an entire nation hating you feels like. I suspect it probably triggers intense remorse. I also don't think this should impact how we treat him.

Saying you're sorry means nothing if your behavior doesn't change. In a sense, an apology is a promise, but it's your burden to fulfill that promise with changed behavior. (I recently was explaining this to a child, but a lot of adults still need to learn it.)
