re: comments about remorse/psychopathy. I think thinking that assholes don't feel remorse is really dangerous - because they *do* feel remorse, and if you think remorse means they're not an asshole then this is a dangerous trap. This is what keeps people in abusive relationships.

as in; people are really good at convincing themselves to feel the correct emotions (you and me included!) for the situation. If people are really mad at you you will likely feel guilty and bad, but this does *not* mean you are less dangerous or will actually change.

so when I'm asking if Derek feels bad, I'm not asking if he's an asshole or not. I'm just curious about what the weight of an entire nation hating you feels like. I suspect it probably triggers intense remorse. I also don't think this should impact how we treat him.

He probably doesn't feel remorse. It's not the first person he's killed.

I usually think people experience remorse and guilt as a functional thing, and often it happens if everyone gets mad at you enough even if you're a complete asshole. As in; abusive partners often genuinely think feel guilt if you threaten to leave them.

I wonder who was more complicit? The clerk or the asian cop doing fairly passive crowd control?

I in no means want to defend this guy - what he did was obviously despicable and he did it probably because of a power trip. I also think feeling remorse doesn't make you a good person; often people feel it only as long as it's functional, without it changing anything.
