People generally view self harm as a "very bad" thing that they will try to help you stop if they find out you do it. Can someone explain to me why it's bad? If it's done safely, with no lasting damage, and is an effective method of stress relief, why is it so bad?

If you're self harming yourself with food no one will try to stop you.

food is tricky because you need at least some of it to survive, but you absolutely don’t need any amount of self-harm (here I’m defining self-harm as causing intentional direct injury to your body, e.g. cutting your skin or ingesting something knowingly poisonous)

I bet girls that have horizontal scars in their wrists and legs are not happy about them. Maybe lifelong scarring is worth stress relief for years, idk. I know little about the psychology of this but it'd make sense if self-harm happens to stave off suicide.

If they could figure out how to do it with minimal/no scarring maybe that would be way better? I was just reading someone saying they cut on their arms, because that area healed with no scarring for them.

Oh sure then I am okay with it. That'd be an interesting blog genre 'safe self-harm'

I think the main argument against self harm is that it’s a coping mechanism for some underlying issue, so it’s better to figure out what that issue is and solve it if possible, because self-harming is not going to help treat it, and it’s also addictive
