just saw a reddit thread where they're like 'if you're forbidding your partner from masturbating, that's religious brainwashing!' but in the same breath being totally fine with forbidding your partner from pursuing other things they might want even if it damages nobody at all.

Forbidding a partner to masturbate is a projection issue. My ex was violently enraged to hear I did it once. But forbidding a partner from having sex with other people is a concept so fundamental and basic that it goes unsaid and assumed in virtually every relationship on Earth.

is it tho? You do have lots of polyamory things - but also polygamy popped up a lot throughout history, and in a lot of cultures having a mistress is fine as long as you don't talk about it publicly.

Agreed. Same with monogamy, though; That's also throughout history. And you have people in polyamorous relationships that wish things were monogamous - and vice versa. No one style is better or worse than the other. It just depends on the social contract they both agree on.
