i'm vaguely aware when it's happening but it's so hard to stop. it's like this force comes over me and the calvinist bursts out of me like AKSHUALLY GOD DID HARDEN THE PHAROAHS HEART while the rest of me is quietly in the background going 'god isn't real this is irrelevant'

I’ve found it helps ground to ask or deduce what their background is so I can know what systems and frameworks they use. Then counter but from within. Not from another stream.

I don't think this is necessarily specific to if you used to be Christian in your past. Apologetics commonly tries to quibble over things like if OT applies or what is /isnt allegory/prophecy. Its really hard to make someone stick to the end claim.

it’s more fun to debate legalistically within a frame at times, because ultimately it can be a more productive way to hash ot ethics than blowing everything out meta & having to force conversation into an unappreciated set of new assumptions i used to do this with mormons
