one of the most poignant thing i've ever heard on the internet was "Yeah, I only started to feel suicidal once I escaped from North Korea and started living in South Korea"

the context being, north korea was really hard and terrible but there was family, friends, neighbors, everyone was in it together; in their new life in south korea, everyone was isolated from each other and they felt intense pressure to work very hard, alone

Would be interesting to see the inverse- A south korean moving to NK. But I doubt that'll ever happen.

I imagine one key difference was that this person's family and friends were all still back in North Korea, so they were jumping into a new life in a new country all alone. Misery loves company.

You're cut off from your family, possibly feeling guilty that your family will be punished for your escape, and you are alone in a strange and foreign land. How do you NOT feel suicidal?
