I just look at what I imagine, say, the private business that would do what the interstate system does, or utilities, or social services and go "well, looks like government to me".

Like, the organic certification. AFAIK, started out with some private groups creating a label and giving it to some people. Then that grew into a more rigorous certification process.

how does private business come up with the $$ for these projects? I always viewed taxes as funding for things that are necessary but not profitable. Given that the folks of the society benefit from these things, I don’t think it’s bad for them to pay for it, albeit inconvenient

Can you give an example of something you think is particularly important, that government funds, and seems unlikely that private entities could/would fund to an adequate degree?
