Current progressive gender theory seems really inadequate, but it's popular because it's serving an important function - it's giving name and validation to actual experiences people are having. Does anyone have suggestions for a different theory that serves this function better?

sex typically refers to biology. it is very clearly a real thing (even if you can’t draw perfect lines) with predictive power. gender typically refers to people’s identity/lived experiences (in the progressive framework)

All of that is encompassed by male and female. Sex. We identify as our sex. We have sex roles and dimorphic parts of experience and quality of experience. If there is no difference you could say so, but none was presented.

This is a sticking point for me as well. I can't get to the conclusion that I can "not feel like my assigned gender" without the assumption that I do not have a role of authorship over my own gender. That idea is where I get stuck because it seems obvious to me that I do.
