(1/2) Perhaps because eugenics is a pretty egregious violation of the biological rights of others. Add to that the fact that eugenics is a mindful hijacking of the natural process, which some considered sacred.

I'm of the mind that the instant, unthinking push-back is actually a net positive to the society. I think in a long enough time frame eugenics will be inevitable, but I think it comes with immense risks we're prone to underestimating.

It's also one of those boxes you can't close, once opened. The transition between "no eugenics" to "lets remove genetic defects" is a much larger jump than from "lets remove genetic defects" to "no more homosexual people". This makes "No eugenics" a natural Schelling point.
