Most of the serious meditation people I've run into have been men. Is serious meditation actually gendered in this way or do I just have a skewed sample?

Men have more “free time.” It’s pretty popular among single, childless women of equal socioeconomic status.

Yeah, as the other commentator said then I'd expect this to be reflected in all other hobbies that eat up free time, which is definitely not the case.

The most serious at practically any endeavor are men even though the best women still handily beat the average man.

I generally agree with this but for some reason it's more surprising for me when applied to meditation.

I asked around for some anecdata. One friend who knows ~200 hard core meditators said they are roughly gender balanced.
Another friend who helps run 10 day silent meditation retreats said they are usually 2/3 female.

Most people who talk to me of its wonders are dudes. Actually, all dudes save for my cousin. She buys crystals and charges them up by the moon and stuff. I like Jameson, ha

Not what I see around me, it’s pretty even in my circle.
On the other hand, I have many more female than male friends who do yoga.
My male friends who are yoga fanatics also tend to be more in sync with their feminine energy.

Aren’t most of the followers women? In the breathing world, the leaders are men and the followers are women.
