I usually assume people, when selecting mates, have a calibration thing in their heads that evaluates the pool of mate choices "in their league", and then experiences attraction to a top narrow percent of them. I also assume this percentage remains stable; as in, if you-

shake up the mate pool, or change what "in their league" means, that the person's attraction will naturally revert to being triggered by the same top narrow percent.
This feels true because everyone I know seems to be attracted to roughly the same amount of people.

This is different for men and women ofc, but when adjusting for that, these "attraction pools" seem roughly the same size.
Is this a thing? Have people studied this? I want to know the size and variance of this "top narrow percent" is. I'll accept anything even slightly related.

Sure, this is true - but I'm thinking about this specifically regards to "in your league". After all, you see traditionally unattractive people who appear to be successfully attracted to each other regardless of the existence of the absolute top hot.

"League" has never been something I've taken into consideration. I dated a multi-Grammy award winning artist and someone who was homeless within the same year.

I believe there exist studies showing people are attracted to others who look like themselves. Like really really like themselves.

Many people have a set of criteria as to what they want in a mate or lover. However, what we "think" we need does not always align with the people who pull on our heart strings or push our "lust" buttons. The mysteries of love often defy our ideas of who we are and what we want.
