1. find someone interested and generally smart who knows nothing about your topic. Like a high school student or something.

2. Tell them a bit about your topic and have them generate a list of questions. Make it at least ten questions long.

3. Tape record a conversation about the questions
Start with the questions that are hardest to answer.
Identify the questions that most motivate you to write
Make sure you cover the basic questions your audience will have ( you did come up with an audience right? Thats Step 0)

5. Print it out and lay it all over your floor. Congratulations you have a draft.

Write the table of contents, then make it look like you knew what you were doing all along with further drafts.

i like this! This also is close to a sense of what I felt like i needed to do - mostly sort of "talk" about what I need to write with other people to get a more clear sense of it, shaped by their curiosities.

Cool, glad this was useful. Something about the way you asked the question made me think that a concrete process like this would hit the spot.

the meta-move is something like notice when you have a sense you need to do something and then make it concrete and do it if it still seems like a good idea. Any time you need me to ask you what you sense is next and tell you to probably do that I'm game :P
