The french revolution is credited with changing women's styles from gaudy to naturalistic, around 1800. Queen Victoria is credited with a switch from gaudy to 'modest/pious' in 1830s. But fashion chilled out in the 1880s too - what was the cause for that?

If you're interested, there's a whole subsection of the web devoted to fashion history that would have your answers. There's a lass called Karolina Żebrowska who's a little like you in appearance (apart from all the period costumes) and personality. Probably why she's also cool.

It's a bloody small world, but good taste is good taste. TL;DR: I think the fashion shift from conservative dress, was largely due to the economy. A whole generation of war meant there was less spare fabric in Europe. Cutting down on dye and layers was everyone doing their part
