The french revolution is credited with changing women's styles from gaudy to naturalistic, around 1800. Queen Victoria is credited with a switch from gaudy to 'modest/pious' in 1830s. But fashion chilled out in the 1880s too - what was the cause for that?

Not necessarily a reason, but a data point: the Rational Dress Society was founded in 1881. (I always wanted to found a club for latex and corset lovers called the Irrational Dress Society …)

One contributing factor was that in late 19th century there was a rise of women's associations (YWCA, Women's Christian temperance union, Domion Order of King's Daughters, Aberdeen Association, Girl's Friendly society.

I always find it strange how elaborate past fashions were compared with today. Clothes from the 19th century don't look practical at all (or comfortable).

The French revolution is so badass. It makes the American one look like an angry toddler. They execute their royalty, simply amazing.
