The french revolution is credited with changing women's styles from gaudy to naturalistic, around 1800. Queen Victoria is credited with a switch from gaudy to 'modest/pious' in 1830s. But fashion chilled out in the 1880s too - what was the cause for that?

If you're interested, there's a whole subsection of the web devoted to fashion history that would have your answers. There's a lass called Karolina Żebrowska who's a little like you in appearance (apart from all the period costumes) and personality. Probably why she's also cool.

One contributing factor was that in late 19th century there was a rise of women's associations (YWCA, Women's Christian temperance union, Domion Order of King's Daughters, Aberdeen Association, Girl's Friendly society.
