Lately people have been telling me gender identity is a thing you feel - that you can 'feel like a woman', for example. But I legit don't understand what that means. Does feeling like a woman mean you want to wear women's clothes? Or have a vagina? Or get sexually pursued?

Introspection, what defines the feeling? that which I said earlier, for most success is usually when social reality around said individual conforms to the belief that they are said gender and/or their body does.

so it’s rooted in ancient stereotypes from tv shows in the 70s?

It's very badly defined & seems to shift as needed to justify calling it a gender. It commonly seems to involve feeling like one's attractiveness revolves around looks typical of the other sex. There seems to be no reason they need to be called the other sex to get that though.

I think the word that’s causes trouble here is "woman". In gender-terms, that’s fluid as fuck. If you felt like a "gloink", you’d be hard pressed to define that even if 4 billion other people agreed they felt gloink too. I never understood that shit either. I feel human.

If you are being sincere, afaiu it’s a sense of proprioceptive or other dysphoria. Eg if you walked into a restaurant and people said “oh hey fella” & proceeded to treat you as a man, it’d feel...off at best. Expectation/reality mismatch, like a missing stair

Precisely. That’s the crux of it.
