What you said was equivalent to telling a black/jewish/roma person that you view them as sub-humans, but you will continue referring to them as equal humans out of politeness. You might not see this, you might not agree, but that is what your words convey.

But I legitimately don't view them as subhuman

I get that. But you saying that you view them as their birth sex is the equivalent of that statement for a trans person: that IS how many trans people feel about that statement. If you can understand that, you might be able to understand why people reacted as they did.

Would it work if I were much clearer then? Like I don't want them to misinterpret me as thinking they're subhuman, so I'm super careful and clear about how I communicate my thoughts?

It depends.. If you insist on using a view and framework that denies trans ppl's gender identity you will get the same response, because that is still calling us subhuman. 1/2

I honestly believe that there is a way to have good convos about gender. But as a cis person you really need to assume all your ideas about gender might not match the reality of others, and start from that point. And to know that some ideas might never sit well with others.

Yeah I think most people are? I'm agender and have no sense of gender identity

Then we have a good clue there: the fact that you don't have a sense of G.I. maybe explains why you have trouble empathising with how your views about G.I. hurt others.

The idea that my views on things hurt people is a really dangerous one. The world where opinions are shut down not by discussion but by "it hurts" is like some freaky dystopian future for me

Do I really need to repeat the exercise on Nazi thinking to refute this idea?

The idea that you have an impact on and potentially the power to harm others is "dystopian" to you? Are you sure you just aren't clutching your pearls because people are disagreeing with you or upset at what you said on a public forum

are u implying that people simply having the emotional capacity to feel hurt by things you say is dystopian?.... you do realize that people have feelings? and that your words can impact those feelings?
