The closest I've seen to traditional religious gender roles outside of that world is drag queen culture, weirdly? I don't mind it - i don't care if you're a drag queen or a housewife - just I wonder if this is evidence for the persistent allure of strong behavioral categories.
all of which I typically see pushed to an extreme with drag queens. Which, I guess is the point? They're doing a caricature of women so it makes sense. It feels a bit weird tho.

oh god i think i might be realizing i feel offended by drag queens right now because they're being regressive to women or something, what's happening

they caricature our voices, faces, wear stereotypically female clothes, and act out a stereotype of female behaviour, it's incredibly regressive, and it's genuinely horrible to see people idealising this as LGBT representation

that's what i mean. drag queens reinforce the very elements of womanhood that people associated with the left would call 'toxic' or reinforcing the 'male gaze'. but it gets a pass for some reason, for reinforcing the very gender roles we are told doesn't exist
