It's crazy to me how fast fashion moved from 1900-1930. This is only 30 years difference and it shot straight from "revenge ghost halloween costume" into "quirky art major at starbucks".
Compare the empire silhouettes of 1810 to the corsets and crinolines of the 1850s. Really you have 4 periods: very low innovation for most of the medieval period; accelerating innovation for the early modern period; extremely fast innovation ~1780-1990; and now, low innovation.
This is my favorite way of thinking about relative historical distances. Eg (and I’m not going to look this up first to confirm) Cleopatra was as far removed from construction of Pyramids as we are from Cleopatra.
