I have a few minor yet strong mental quirks, and I'm curious if there's a term for these patterns or if anyone else has something similar. THREAD:
i'm having trouble thinking of a situation that fits that, do you have an example?

so for recipes, i can't just follow one and have it work out properly. i need to look at a bunch to understand why certain things are done - not just what to do. if i have instructions but don't understand why, i can't troubleshoot if anything goes wrong

This is a great example. I won’t begin a task unless I understand it in a very detailed way, so that I may be able to adapt if something goes wrong. To take it one step further, I don’t like driving somewhere unless I’ve been there before, I need to know I’m at the right place.

or if i'm learning anything new, and am just given instructions to apply without knowing why they work that way. it was a huge problem in math at school - we just learned to apply formulas without understanding why. also at jobs, being given a list of tasks w/o a larger context

if i don't understand why something is done, i seem to inevitably fuck it up because i don't know which corners to cut. i've noticed that not everyone has this problem - they seem to figure that out some other way

I absolutely *have* to know the why of everything to make it work. With a 'why', things just flow on their own because their decisions become simple to understand. Without, I can't do anything.
