You meet someone trying to sell their dead father's guitar. They have the receipt, the guitar is clearly identifiable. They offer to sell it to you for 4k.
You, however, know the guitar is worth 50k.
Do you buy the guitar for 4k without telling them?

I voted "no" partly aspirationally, as something I'd hope I'd do. But the more I think about it, the more I think I couldn't pay someone $4k for something worth $50k.
It would be interesting to find the line where I think it's okay. Is paying $25k just a good deal? Maybe?

Sounds like exact opposite of selling a lemon car. I guess if you wouldn't sell a lemon, you wouldn't buy this guitar for cheap either

I answered without thinking it through. I said no. But now I say reconsider because the owner isn’t treating the guitar with the sentimentality it deserves. They don’t respect its value. So maybe yes?
Or maybe alert someone else in their family

No. I cant afford 4k. I dont buy it period.
Also, according to the people in the thread, it's only worth 50k if you find 'the right collector', which isn't guaranteed to happen.

As I grow older, I realize that a lot of polite society, capitalism, etc, depend on folks not trying to fleece each other.

If the person was really rich I might do it. But with most people I just wouldn't feel right doing it. So I answered no.
But I don't know if I could walk away from $46k if it really happened.
