I voted "no" partly aspirationally, as something I'd hope I'd do. But the more I think about it, the more I think I couldn't pay someone $4k for something worth $50k. It would be interesting to find the line where I think it's okay. Is paying $25k just a good deal? Maybe?

No. I cant afford 4k. I dont buy it period. Also, according to the people in the thread, it's only worth 50k if you find 'the right collector', which isn't guaranteed to happen.

Ebay has solved that problem.

As I grow older, I realize that a lot of polite society, capitalism, etc, depend on folks not trying to fleece each other.

If you pay your rent by selling an antique instrument every month without bothering to do some research to figure out the true value, I can see how that would be a problem

I'd give him a heads up, but I won't fault the guy for buying it.

Sounds like exact opposite of selling a lemon car. I guess if you wouldn't sell a lemon, you wouldn't buy this guitar for cheap either

I have a hard time seeing the moral equivalency since this deal came to you rather than you looking to push one on others
