Research restrictions are mostly due to IRB boards and funding. If the people funding you don't care about ethics or PR costs you can go hog wild.

You could just never have the results published in a journal, nobody would replicate them, you'd be shunned by the research community. People can have their university degrees revoked (bachelors, masters, or doctorates), lose licensure (if they have any kind, e.g. medical).

But no, no real legal consequences as long as youre not breaking any existing laws, from what I understand.
