I'd rather watch a loved one die than wear uncomfortable socks.

Nature/nurture level of unknowable. It is more socially acceptable to stop for pain, but with discomfort, if you don’t “suck it up”, you are shamed. Pain has a greater chance of being taken seriously and handled, while discomfort - of being repressed and magnified.

I answered pain, but it might be because I've experience such little pain and so much discomfort.

It really depends. Nausea is really hard for me to handle at times, but I barely even experience hunger. There are also some pains similar to grief that are very difficult to handle, but most non-serious physical pains, like a stubbed toe, are pretty easy to deal with for me.
