People generally view landlords as making easy money without providing value. I like easy money, so I started planning on buying a house and I read a bunch of landlord forums. And after seeing what landlords were saying... then I wasn't so sure. It almost seemed not worth it.

Civilization tends to equilibria of no free energy for new entrants. You should have been more skeptical about the idea that becoming a landlord generates excess returns on time+money. There are people making excess returns, but they bought houses before the boom.

I should have been, yeah. Most of this idea came from the ambient impression of everybody on reddit (and some of the weird fb groups i'm in) viewing it as easy passive income.

I can imagine. Going forwards, don't forget to be skeptical about everything else they say about economics, civilization, how things got to be the way they are, whose fault anything is, who's being naughty or nice, how to fix any aspect of it all, and what the future holds.
