The idea is to break the chain of transmission. After that we hope that subsequent transmissions are small enough not to overwhelm systems and are detected quickly enough to be contained. And hope that a vaccine arrives that can provide herd immunity.

The time to develop herd immunity and treatment I would hope is less than years. There is a point at which people will have to just go out and take risks. If we can break chains of transmission we have a chance for long term solutions.
Depends on what assumptions you make.
The plan is lock everyone up for two weeks then become South Korea.
