Conversation

Occasionally I have realizations about social interactions that are obvious and basic and I'm stunned it took me so long. For example, I just had pre surgery meeting. The lady went down a list of things I can't do - "don't wash your hair for x days" or "don't eat in the morning"-

I started to say "I do no-poo" or "I intermittent fast so that'll be easy", but realized at the last second that she's not asking me if it'll be easy, she's not making conversation, she just has to go down this list with me. I was surprised that I didn't immediately get this.

I used to install tvs/displays in commercial and gov't environments, and all the office workers made the same "oh, you're supposed to install it at my house joke". My apprentice would pull out a notebook and add a tally to a page labeled "tv jokes". Clients weren't amused lol

The one that took me 28 years to figure out was that for most people, the purpose of conversation usually isn’t information sharing. It doesn’t really matter what they talk about it. It’s more about bonding.
