It's so painfully obvious that there's a lot of way more important factors that go into an attractive face than just both sides looking the same. All you have to do is look at a face and notice what you like. So how the hell did "beauty = symmetry" become such a popular idea??

It kind of freaks me out that I've heard this simple story (as in, the importance of symmetry elevated much higher than it is) repeated uncritically by so many people, when it's a story so easy to doubt by simply paying attention to our experience.

Hmm well I think across cultures, symmetry absolutely is the shared feature that people find beautiful. Everything else is learned and cultural aesthetics.

This isn't true. Vertically shorter, more forward grown faces with high cheekbones and wide maxilla are more attractive cross culturally, and babies naturally look at these faces more than longer, sunken faces with a recessed chin. None of this is genetic either.

The first sentence seems to be inconsistent (it wouldn't be if you dropped the word "more"). Saying that symmetry is beautiful only implies it is ceteris paribus. It isn't to suggest that no other factors contribute to beauty. At least, I hope people wouldn't suggest that.

Harrison Ford is a prime example: very attractive but not very symmetrical.

I concur with this quote. The facial type I find most attractive tends to have large eyes, a kind of elegant variant of a “witch’s” nose, and large lips. Examples of this facial type would be Margot Robbie, Angelina Jolie and Fran Drescher in her youth.

It's easy to quantify symmetry. It's the drunk under the lamppost story.
