I feel like we're at war and one candidate says we should build our own nukes and the other candidate wants free nukes for all with public funding and I'm just like hey maybe we shouldn't be at war at all guys?

Like most institutions, people have a hard time imagining alternatives and figure what we have now must already be the best possible structure. Much easier to imagine more money will fix things

I used to think that. But one thing I learned since having kids is that social/peer pressure *can* be incredibly effective at getting (neurotypical) kids to learn stuff that is both useful to them and also unlikely for them to pick up if undirected.

One-on-one learning and self directed learning are also important, and I do think that school is not so good at facilitating that, but ideally kids get some of that at home. The school schedule a bit of a slog through.
