But aren't these strangers men? Men on men violence, that is.

Of course they are, how is that relevant?

Defend themselves against the person who has chosen them as a target? Blokes don’t walk around in suits of armour with swords. If someone decides to assault you, you’re probably in trouble regardless of your gender.

Are you talking about sexual assault or all assault? I guess it could just be a much worse experience being assaulted as a woman, so probability lower, impact higher.

One thing that could explain it is a fairly small sub population of men who gets assaulted a lot and is in fact scared of assault. I don’t know if that’s the real situation though.

One group that I have a bunch of anecdotes about is boys in private school uniforms walking through certain neighborhoods in NYC. High risk of assault IIRC and IIRC they did worry about it.

because the main factor here is that it's men and men are more likely to go for weaker targets which are typically women/non-men. men are the main perpetrators regardless of the gender of their victims and women in general feel more powerless to stop it.

Seems sufficiently explained by (a) women having less self-defense ability + (b) human tendency to greater fear of dangers they feel less control over (see: cars vs. airplanes)

If a woman's ability to defend her self were truly so inferior, wouldn't the majority of victims of assault be women? When want to attack someone, you don't generally aim for the most capable defenders.
