This seems extremely parallel to trends I've seen with sex workers. They actively try to be as sexy as possible to build up as large a following of (wealthy) horny men as possible, and then their attitude is strong disdain towards those men.

I think this comes naturally with asymmetry? Your power is equal to the crowd that follows you; *given by* the crowd that follows you, but in comparison to any one individual in the crowd you are much more powerful.
