I do work all the time for no pay, for people I love and my community. Lots of people do this, particularly when it's fulfilling.

The issue is implementing this on a national scale. Small groups can bond over familial ties or friendship, but groups as enormous as a country need something equally as big in order to feel any sense of community (religion, nationalism, a shared enemy).
